About Me

creating a kid-friendly basement play space

I wanted to finish my basement in a way that was bright, fun, and easy to keep clean. My plans were to create a space that the kids could do whatever they want in and not cause any permanent damage. I have done all that I can to protect the walls, but was still left with the difficult choice of what to use to cover the concrete floors. Did I want carpeting that would be more comfortable for them to sit on or did I want hardwood floors that would be easier to clean? I went back and forth for a few weeks and finally talked with a flooring professional. So, what did we do? My blog will tell you!

3 Things To Know About Refinishing Hardwood Floors

When it comes to flooring, hardwood floors are very sought after. Hardwood flooring has long been a favorite due to its strength, durability, and beauty. It's a material that works well with a variety of architectural styles. Hardwood can be warm, traditional, and inviting, or elegant and modern. This type of flooring is also very long-lasting. One of the main draws of hardwood flooring is that when the finish starts to fade or the flooring becomes scratched, replacement is not always necessary since hardwood can be refinished. Here are three things that you should know when it comes to refinishing hardwood flooring.

Cost

Compared to replacing your hardwood flooring, refinishing can be a bargain. On average you can expect to pay between $1,072 and $2,361 to refinish your hardwood flooring. In contrast, new hardwood floors typically cost between $2,542 and $6,507. Refinishing is typically far more cost-effective than replacement. With refinishing, the floor is sanded down to the original wood layer and then refinished in order to protect the newly exposed wood. Refinishing can leave old hardwood flooring looking brand new.

How Long It Takes

If you are considering refinishing your home's hardwood flooring, it's important to know how long it can take. The process of refinishing may take longer than you expect. Furniture will need to be moved and space will need to be made in order to be able to refinish the floors. It also takes time for the new finish to fully dry. How long this process takes is dependent on the type of wood flooring you have, humidity levels, and the finish you decide to go with. It can easily take between three and seven days for your floors to be finished and you may even need to temporarily move out while your floors are being worked on.

It Can Be Done Multiple Times

If your floors have been refinished in the past, you may be under the impression that they are not able to be refinished again. However, it's important to know that wood flooring can be refinished multiple times. In fact, hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished up to ten times in most instances. Of course, some flooring may not be in good enough shape to be refinished. A professional can help you determine whether or not refinishing or replacement is the right option.

If your hardwood flooring is looking a little worse for wear, refinishing may be the right option. However, there are a few things that you should know. In general, refinishing is less expensive than replacement. However, it can still cost over $1,000. It can also take up to a week before you can walk on the refinished floors. The good news is that your flooring can likely be refinished multiple times, extending its lifespan significantly.
