creating a kid-friendly basement play space

About Me

creating a kid-friendly basement play space

I wanted to finish my basement in a way that was bright, fun, and easy to keep clean. My plans were to create a space that the kids could do whatever they want in and not cause any permanent damage. I have done all that I can to protect the walls, but was still left with the difficult choice of what to use to cover the concrete floors. Did I want carpeting that would be more comfortable for them to sit on or did I want hardwood floors that would be easier to clean? I went back and forth for a few weeks and finally talked with a flooring professional. So, what did we do? My blog will tell you!

5 Reasons To Use Large Tiles For Your Floor

Are you looking to replace your existing flooring with tile due to it being durable and long-lasting?  If so, you must decide on what kind of tile you want to install.  With so many choices to make, you should consider narrowing your selection to large tiles from a place like Clayton Paint & Flooring Center for the following reasons.

The Room Will Look Larger

While small tiles typically work well for a bathroom, you want to use large tiles for the larger rooms in your home.  They contribute to the size of the room looking large, which prevents the room from feeling cramped.

It Will Be Less Labor Intensive To Install

When you use small tiles, each one needs to be laid down and spaced by hand, which can be a very time consuming process. Using large tiles will mean that the floor will be installed faster, leading to lower labor costs if you have the tiles professionally installed.

There Will Be Less Grout To Clean

The surface of the tile will be simple to clean, but you'll find that it's much harder to clean grout.  It demands a lot of scrubbing, which is a stressful and time-consuming process.  The smaller the tiles you use, the more grout you'll have to clean later on.  By using larger tiles, you'll find that there will be simply be less grout to clean. Your high traffic areas, such as near a main entrance way, may only have one or two lines of grout that need frequent cleaning, which can be done quickly.

The Room Will Look Less Busy

You may not realize it, but small tiles can be an eyesore in a big room. It causes a room to look busy with it being visually complex. Since the grout between large tiles is spread apart, the focus of a room will be drawn some place other than your flooring.

Fewer Issues With Lippage

The other concern with a tile floor installation is lippage.  Tiles have hard edges to them, and if the installation is not done properly, it can cause edges to be raised above the surface of the floor. You will feel the rough edge with your feet when you walk over them, and it's a problem that is tough to fix after the installation is complete.

Larger tiles mean that you will have fewer edges where the tile meets the grout. With the installation already being less labor intensive, it means that more care can be put into ensuring that the entire tile surface is even with minimum lippage.
